Court addresses and phone numbers come from county websites and can change. Confirm with the clerk before you file or travel.

A Different District from Montgomery County

Many people assume Stewart County cases are handled the same way as Clarksville cases because the two counties are neighbors. They are not in the same judicial district. Montgomery County is in the 19th, and Stewart is in the 23rd. That means different judges, different local rules of practice and a different docket calendar. When a Stewart County estate, divorce, or business dispute needs a court, we work within the 23rd District’s procedures and the Stewart County clerks’ offices, not Montgomery County’s.

Because the district’s judges rotate among counties, scheduling in Stewart County depends on which judge is sitting and when. Planning the case calendar early helps clients avoid surprises.

Matters We Commonly See from Dover and Stewart County

Estates and probate. When a Stewart County resident dies, the estate is generally opened in the county where that person lived, so it goes through the Chancery Court in Dover. We help families through probate and estate administration and, when an estate is contested, estate litigation.

Land and construction. Documents affecting land, including liens, are recorded with the county Register of Deeds, which is in the Dover courthouse. Owners, builders and subcontractors with payment or workmanship disputes can read about construction disputes and contract review before signing a deal.

Families and businesses. We also assist with family law matters, forming a small business, and general civil lawsuits.

About Dover and the Area

Dover is the county seat of Stewart County and is the home of Fort Donelson National Battlefield. Part of Fort Campbell also lies in Stewart County. Roger A. Maness is licensed in both Tennessee and Kentucky, and the firm has served the region from Clarksville since 1923.

We also work in nearby counties. See our pages for Montgomery County (Clarksville), Stewart County (Dover), Houston County (Erin), Robertson County (Springfield), and Cheatham County (Ashland City).
