Houston County was created in 1871 from parts of Stewart, Humphreys, Montgomery and Dickson Counties, and it is one of the smaller counties in our region. Its courts are part of the 23rd Judicial District, so the judges who sit in Erin also sit in neighboring counties on a rotating basis. Anyone who has a case there should expect that scheduling depends on the judge’s circuit calendar, and that the clerks in the courthouse are a good source for filing requirements.
Houston County’s Chancery Court lists a wide range of matters on its own website, and that breadth is helpful for families. Wills, estates and guardianships, divorces and real estate matters can often be handled in the same court and the same clerk’s office.
When a loved one dies. Probate for a Houston County resident is generally filed in the county where the person lived. Our attorneys can guide a family through probate and estate administration, and Albert Marks’s practice focuses on estates. When heirs disagree about a will or trust, see estate litigation.
Planning ahead. A properly signed will and, in some cases, a trust can make the process easier for the family. Read about wills and trusts in Tennessee.
Family and civil matters. Divorce and other family matters are discussed on our divorce and family law page. For disputes over money, property or contracts, see civil lawsuits and business litigation.
